It was Black Friday here. No not the religious one, although there are some for whom this day does have a twisted religious meaning. After all, it is when they worship at the altars of Macy’s, Target, Best Buy, Office Depot, H & M and other assorted firms for those must have gifts. Personally, it seemed a little more here like the song by Steely Dan, that infamous floating musical workshop…but more on that part later. Here it was a followup visit with Dr. Nick.
Those of you who have been following this over the past couple years know that I dig Nick and we get along like family members. Ok…more like relatives who actually do get along. And he wanted to see me ASAP after the results of the last oilchange came in. The discussion I had with Nick I intimated earlier in an email to my crush, not a pity party but to let her know before anyone else online the nature of this. Hence, now this post….
Nick mentioned that for one the cholesterol numbers were up. Part of this I can see, there was no real change in the diet which would have warranted an uptick in same. But I have been on occassion getting those cheap ‘roasted’ [a nice way of labeling something which looks a little like breaded and fried] wings at Freddy Kroger, but no change which would be so severe. As a result, the medication for that has been changed from Pravastatin to Simvastatin, which is by its own design, supposed to be a stronger medication for this purpose. But the other portion of the visit was much more sober.
This had to do with the kidneys. Over the past 2-3 years they have been under the thumb of CKD or chronic kidney disease, which is now at Stage 3. One can live with this, in fact with the right type of care and diet, can do so without things getting worse. HOWEVER…there are some for whom the numbers in this tend to rise and fall worse than a sine wave. Which is where I am…while the number associated with the creatinine went from 2.1 in the last test to 2.3 and may seem like a minor increase, in those who have CKD this can be scary. It indicates that the kidneys are losing function, as well as struggling to try to work normally. Nick and I discussed this in detail and while he is not a nephrologist [Todd is and that point is coming up], he did agree with me that it is not such a bad idea to ask Todd to put my name on the national kidney transplant wait list. To be honest I see that as being the only logical choice to the problem, which to this mind dialysis is not.
No offense to those who are on it and do so thrice a week If it works for them and can be done so with little pain and even less anemia, then by all means it works there. But that is not where my mind is, nor do I want to do so. If that is the alternative or for that matter waiting things out in ‘God’s Waiting Room’, I will pass. I do not see life as being something where someone is wired for sound like one of the end sequences in ‘THX-1138’ or the institutional sequence in ‘Coma’…and if that is the choice that is left, I may as well have a Morphine IV connected to the body and gently go off into the sunset with a nice dreamscape…with the music from the portable CD player or multiplay DVD in the background. No I am not giving up, but this is just my own frustration with the fact that with all the advances we have made in medicine that one of the methods when dealing with the kidneys seems and is somewhat barbaric.
Oh before it is said, this is not a pity party or a cry out for help. Please…let’s not even go there, no need for that. The fact that things are still working otherwise is a miracle. I do wish and hope that maybe this can balance out without going to the surgical extreme and maybe will live long enough to meet the person I am smitten with, as well as see my cats through to middle age. That was well as that road trip to see the homes of their favorite football teams…..Arrowhead for the Chiefs and The Murph for the Chargers.
As for this being Black Friday….well it was uneventful. It came but with no packages, boxes or bags!!!! That Grinch-ism aside, it was quite sedate. People were being civil, which can only mean that this was the quiet before the storm. That or some folks start getting really antsy about that one obscure toy that is wanted seeing it was mentioned during the ABC Saturday Morning block of Disney-created mayhem.
Well that is it for now…the next big thing, barring new pics and a post about the diet will be around the 13th of December when I have the sitdown with Todd. So in the interim….from the colortini….please enjoy the colourcast as the pics and words fly through the air.
